Holiday Research and Sharing
Research and teach about a new religious holiday to the class. Each pair of students will present on Monday July 25th. Often we learn about different belief systems through customs and holidays that other groups have. This presentation is about the experience of the holiday not the statistics and facts. For example if I was going to present about the Buddhist New Years in Japan I would perhaps bring in some mochi for people to try and maybe play one of these games: hanetsuki, takoage, koma, sugoroku, fukuwarai, or karuta. Or I might have people make a post card related to nengajou. You may notice that these practices are not the most intimate of the religious elements of the News Years in Japan, however often when we travel and learn about new religious holidays we do not start with the most intimate elements, we often start with those that we see--the tip of the iceberg. So in this presentation you will be sharing the tip of the iceberg and then talking a little more in depth about the culture below the surface of the water.
Here is a list of holy days around the world.
Sign up on the Google Document Box Link below at the bottom of the page. Fill in the chart with information you will research about the holiday.
Presentation day:
We will set up the food at the beginning of class and then get in a circle and go around so that each set of partners can explain the food and share the item that brought related to the holiday.
On your website:
1) Put a picture of you and your partner's presentation.
2) You will write about your plan and the information you are going to share about the holiday especially focusing on the food and artifact/activity.
3) Also you must write a reflection on how your presentation and preparation went. Write about how it was looking for or making the food-was it easy, was it fun, challenging please explain how it went (please include pictures).
4) Lastly write on your webpage post about 3 things you learned about from other groups that seemed interesting, this could be the food or activity.

- You and your partner (Find your partner on this list) should sign up for a holiday of your choosing using the button on the bottom. Make sure no one else has signed up for the same holiday. And also try to make it a different religion.
- Prepare and bring in a sample of the food eaten at the holiday. If the holiday has fasting (no eating) bring in a sample of the that is eaten to break the fast or from the religion at another time in the year. During the presentation you will teach about the food and the purpose it holds for the holiday.
- Prepare/Bring something else that represents or is done during the religious holiday. This could be a sample of a quick game, an artifact, a quick gesture that is used, some terms, a song, or anything you think would work.
- The entire presentation should be between 7 and 8 minutes (unless your group has 3 people it should be under 10 minutes).
- Complete the Writing Part below (On Your Website)
- You will be graded on Clarity, Completeness, Creativity, and Content (Specific)
