Speaking Journal Assignments
✴You will be expected to complete four(reduced to three) speaking journals during the 1st semester.
* Your speaking journals will be more detailed than in EIC1, and you will be expected to put a lot of thought into each assignment (planning what you will talk about, preparing vocabulary, reflecting on the conversation, and creating a plan for the next speaking journal).
*You will also use speaking journals to learn more deeply about topics covered in class. This will help you practice using the vocabulary, ideas, topic language, etc.
What: Record a 10 minute conversation with a proficient speaker of English. Listen to the conversation, transcribe your speech, and write a reflection in the Google Doc for that assignment. Your topic will be based on a unit we are studying in class, but you will have the freedom to choose your focus. You will do four speaking journals each semester. You will have three conversations, and the final assignment will be writing only.
Why: Two reasons: (1) improve your speaking, and (2) learn more about class content.
When: By 11:59pm on the due date. You will have about 2 weeks to do each assignment.
Late work will lose 5 points for each day it is late.
Who: With any proficient English speaker – teachers, advisors, foreign exchange students, or friends. (You may speak with another KUIS student if their English is much better than yours, but you may not speak with an EIC2 classmate.)
Where: Anywhere that is not noisy. For example, the practice center, yellow sofas (at a quiet time), exchange students' lounge (3rd floor of building 4), or making an appointment with a learning advisor.
How: Record on your iPad with the VRP 7 or Voice Record Pro app. Choose Medium quality.
**Advice: As soon as you finish the conversation, rename and upload your voice recording:
❖ Tap “Change title”. Select “Also change the file name”. Type your name and assignment number. (For example: Rob Werner 1.) Then, tap the check mark (✓). It’s very important that you see the same file name twice. If the bottom file has a lot of numbers, try it again.
❖ Tap “Convert to mp3”. Look at the new mp3 file, and make sure you see the same file name twice. (If you don’t, tap “Rename file”.) Tap the mp3 file. Tap “Save to Google Drive”. Tap “Save”. Now, your recording will be in a safe place so you won’t lose it!
After you are finished writing the reflection, move both files (reflection and mp3 recording) to your shared folder. You will receive a grade and comments on your reflection Doc.
**Note: It’s okay if your recording is more than 10 minutes, but please remember that you will need to transcribe your own speech for the entire conversation.
